International Contacts

Poverty is Everywhere!

I have yet to hear from the individuals that I contact, so I have chosen this week to read from the research through podcast. This site is new to me, and I must say I was impressed.
I chose to read the information on Poverty in Columbia, Mexico. The presenter, Sabina Alkire, discussed the issues that has caused poverty to continue and how they receive their data. A lot of issues that were discussed included that many individuals view poverty as low-income, which is true because that is exactly what I thought at first. Poverty consist of low-income, health, education, mental ability, all factors that contribute to one not functioning to their full capabilities.
Poverty is an issue that is world-wide. In this video I learned how the government is trying to grasp hold as to why families are in the state that they are in. Yes, jobs was the leading factors because majority of the companies were closing, but what wasn't taken into consideration was the jobs coming back, but with less pay and the economy expensive rising. Childcare is another issue that wasn't taken into consideration. Caring for children is expensive and even more expensive when you have to pay someone else to care for your child.
Their are many factors that play a part of poverty and their are many programs that are launching to help wrap their arms around a successful plan to minimize the problem. With all the programs available, families need to seek out and work with the programs. We hear a lot of individuals who want help, but very few who actually seek out resources that are available to solve the problem, or at least lift some weight off of a person for the time being.
My hopes are the programs will be available in a sense where all individuals are a where of the resources and they will begin to be scene by individuals through commercial and/or flyers sent through the mail.

The information you shared today provides me with additional resources to share with others. It is amazing how poverty is always deemed to be based solely on income, when other factors should be included in assessing how to rebuild families to care for their children. I too had the same thoughts. Hope you get a response from your professional contacts.

  2. What a great insight into how broad poverty really is. It is often looked at as one singular definition but it is not. It sounds like Columbia, Mexico is taking the right steps to try and figure out why the poverty levels are what they are. You bring up a great point about resources and their availability. There are almost always resources available to those that are in poverty. They are just not always aware of them or willing to seek them out on their own. Making them more known is a great key to hoping that more will access them. It is also our job as educators to be aware of these resources and help out the families in our care.

  3. TaShanna,

First thanks for sharing your insight on poverty, it's interesting to know that the lack of jobs wasn't a consideration on the poverty level. I am confused, because I would have thought that having a job would determine your level of status. Then for childcare not be considered as well. Some people don't have the luxury of being a single family income. At the same time knowing that there are resources out there and people aren't using it, could be a means of possibly cutting such resources if they aren't being used. That's interesting how Columbia, Mexico is handling poverty.

  4. TaShanna,
You are so right! Poverty is everywhere and there is a lot done to help prevent it. It is saddening that a world wide issue like this one could affect so many people and still be on- going. I was wondering if you know of any great programs that help support families who are in low- income poverty? I have heard of the YMCA and the services they provide are great especially if you are looking for temporary job or summer job.
