Excepting Something Different
I chose to pick a country off of the top of my head. The first thing I could think of was Ecuador. I have no idea what to expect from a family who comes from the country of Ecuador, I am not even aware of its location. This is extremely interesting.
To prepare myself for the welcoming I would:
1. Study the culture in different parts of there country.
2. Find out what language they speak and use a translator of Google translator to pronounce some of the simply things, such as hello, bathroom, kitchen/hungry, what's your name.
3. Watch videos to learn some of the activities they are interested in doing.
4. Find a museum where they can visit.
5. Try to locate any other individual that may live here that they may converse with.
The idea for implementing these strategies is to help the family realize that we have respect for their country and we do not want them to lose their culture because they are living somewhere unfamiliar. The strategies will also help me to not become bias. I will have the chance to see first-hand what it feels like to encounter something that is "different."
